The past perfect
We use the past perfect to show that one event in the past took place before another past event. The past perfect signals The earliest event. The simple past signals the later event.
Example:
I had gone to Asia for the first time when I was 22.
We were tired because we had worked hard all day.
Conclusion:
We form the past perfect with had + past participle.

When we want to talk about the general purporse or use of something, we can use and infinitive or for+ gerund.
Example:
Infinitive:
I use it to pay bills.
I need it to e-mail my boss.
Gerund:
I use it for paying bills.
I need it for e-mailing my boss.

The gerund for + the verb (ing).
